How to Pick the Right Custom Coaching Board for a Father Who Coaches

So you’ve decided a custom coaching board is the Father’s Day gift for the coach dad on your list. Good call. Now comes the part that throws most gift-shoppers: size, surface type, court layout, and how to handle the artwork. Here’s a quick decision tree that gets you to the right configuration without going down a rabbit hole.
Step 1: Pick the Size
Match the board size to how he’ll use it on game day:
- Does he coach the whole team in huddles, drawing plays for 8–15 players? Get the 22 x 17.5 in board. The big drawing surface is visible from the back of a huddle.
- Does he coach a small team or run mid-sized practices? Get the 15.7 x 12.6 in board. It’s the most popular size — fits in a coach’s bag, big enough for a half-court diagram.
- Is he primarily a skills trainer or assistant coach who works with 1–2 players? Get the 11.4 x 9.4 in board. Pocket-size, easier to carry.
Step 2: Pick the Surface
- Magnetic — comes with play markers (little magnetic discs for players, ball, defenders). You can move them around the court while you talk. Best for showing motion, rotations, set plays. This is the more “giftable” choice because it does more.
- Classic dry-erase — marker on, marker off. Simpler, lighter, sometimes preferred by coaches who don’t want the magnet pieces sliding around mid-conversation.
If you don’t know which he’d prefer, default to magnetic. Most coaches who’ve used both end up keeping the magnetic one in their main bag.
Step 3: Pick the Court Layout
This one is non-negotiable for a good gift — the court layout on the board should match the league he coaches in:
- NBA — NBA half-court lines, three-point arc, restricted area
- WNBA — same as NBA for layout purposes
- NCAA (men’s and women’s) — NCAA three-point line and lane
- FIBA — FIBA international layout (used by international leagues, EuroLeague, etc.)
- High School — US high school federation layout
- 3x3 — half-court 3x3 layout (FIBA 3x3 / Olympic 3x3 spec)
If you’re not sure which league he coaches, take a quick photo of his team’s home court before you order. Or just ask his spouse — usually that’s the only person who can say without ruining the surprise.
Step 4: Send the Team Logo
The other personalization is the team logo on the board face. Best case: you have the team logo as a PNG or SVG file. Worst case: you have a screenshot from a roster sheet, a Facebook team page, or a team flyer. Either works — our design team rebuilds a clean version for the proof if needed.
Send team colors too (hex codes if you have them; otherwise just describe them — “navy blue and gold” is enough).
