Youth Basketball Size by Age: A Complete Guide (Sizes 3-7)

by Ryan Mitchell on Jun 10, 2026

TL;DR: Youth basketball size depends on age. Size 3 (22 in) for under 5, Size 4 (25.5 in) for ages 5-8, Size 5 (27.5 in) for ages 9-11, Size 6 (28.5 in) for girls 12+ and boys 12-14, Size 7 (29.5 in) for men's regulation at 15+. The single biggest youth-coaching mistake is putting a Size 7 ball in the hands of an 11-year-old.

Why ball size matters at the youth level

Basketball - youth basketball training

A ball that's too big causes three permanent skill problems:

  1. Two-hand shooting. A child who can't span the ball with one hand will shoot with two, locking in a flaw that takes years to undo.
  2. Broken shooting form. Heavy balls force young players to throw rather than shoot. The follow-through and elbow alignment disappear.
  3. Lower confidence. A child who can't make a layup or hit a free throw stops practicing. Picking the right ball solves this immediately.

Coaches and parents who switch their kid from Size 7 to Size 5 (when age-appropriate) report dramatic shooting-form improvement within weeks.

How to know if the ball is too big

Two quick tests:

  • One-hand grip test: Can the child palm the ball with one hand, fingers spread, just for a moment? If not, the ball is too big.
  • Free-throw form test: Have the child shoot 10 free throws. If they're throwing with both hands or the elbow is flaring wide, the ball is too heavy.

If either test fails, drop a size.

What about official youth leagues?

Major US youth leagues' size standards:

  • USA Basketball Youth Development Guidelines: Size 4 for 7-8, Size 5 for 9-11, Size 6 for 12+ girls and 12-14 boys, Size 7 for 15+ boys
  • NJB (National Junior Basketball): Same age tiers
  • YMCA youth leagues: Varies by program but typically follows the same pattern
  • AAU (Amateur Athletic Union): Age and gender brackets follow the USA Basketball guidelines

If your league doesn't specify, default to the USA Basketball guidelines above.

What about hoop height?

Ball size and hoop height should scale together:

  • Under 7: 6 ft hoop, Size 3 or 4 ball
  • 7-8: 8 ft hoop, Size 4 ball
  • 9-11: 9 ft hoop, Size 5 ball
  • 12+: 10 ft regulation hoop, Size 6 or 7 ball

For driveway hoops with adjustable height, look at portable basketball hoops with 7.5 to 10 ft adjustment - they can grow with your child.
